The Hawk 20 is a product of 35 years of experience. The Reid's are a very nautical family and through sailing other boats they came up with a design that offered a yachtsman a sailing yacht that is stable, robust and more importantly able to withstand the rigours that our waterways can throw at us.
The hull is 6.10 metres but is both self draining and self righting. With a draft of 0.23 metres she will float in the shallowest of puddles making launching and retrieval very easy indeed. The rudder is transom hung and stored onboard when towing or raised when on a permanent mooring.
The mast can be stepped and taken down easily by a couple of persons negating the need for expensive boatyard costs.
All in all this is a splendid day sailor with an excellent pedigree.
Boat has been used as a training boat in the past but is in above average condition. Included in the sale is a fully braked road trailer, Yamaha 4-stroke outboard engine, mainsail, roller furling genoa and spinnaker gear.
Inventory :Sails and Rigging:
7/8ths fractional Bermudan sloop rigged yacht with deck stepped aluminium spars.
This makes the boat powerful yet easy to handle.
The 140 square feet mainsail provides good off wind boat speed and the easy reef system allows the sail to be reefed using one line led to the winch.
The mainsail can be flattened easily using the clew out haul and back stay tensioner.
Using the spinnaker is straight forward thanks to the stainless steel guide ring mounted to the stem head fitting.
This facilitates the launch and retrieval from a through hull chute that sits flush with the foredeck.
This leads in turn to a large diameter tube to the main bulkhead through which the spinnaker is launched and recovered and then stay there until required again.
This negates the need for re-bagging and keeps it clear of the crews feet.
The yacht is well equipped with Sanders class sails, all of which are in good condition.
These include 2 x main sail, 2 x Jib and 3 x spinnakerInventory:
RM single axle braked trailer with spare wheel
Yamaha 4hp outboard
Suit of sails.
GRP constructed day boat. Designed to be unsinkable thanks to the sealed buoyancy compartments filled with closed cell foam.
The cockpit is large and uncluttered with wide cockpit coamings for safety.
The hull design provides clean entry, low bow wave and is dry in all but the roughest conditions.
Whether it is cruising or racing you are after you will be hard pushed to find such a good all rounder.
The hull planes easily, the tiller is responsive and she makes little wake regardless of speed.
She can be sailed single handed or with a crew making this little boat very versatile indeed.
Another appeal is her self righting ability. If you are trying to convince her indoors that buying a boat for you and the "kids" is the way forward, then you can allay her fears. She has all the stability of a large cruiser with the convenience of a small centre board yacht.
Storage is great too, making this the ideal day boat. There are two large lockers in the cockpit amidships, port and starboard and just aft of the mast are two additional dry lockers suitable for smaller, personal items.
The foredeck hatch reveals a cavernous space ideal for sail storage.
The centre board keel is made from marine grade alloy and is fully aero foiled for performance.
This is operated from the cockpit by pulling on a rope. The mechanism is hidden so that fingers and clothes can not be caught in it and the special design allows the keel to be removed from inside the boat avoiding potentially expensive cranage fees.
With the keel up the boat only draws 9 inches. That coupled with the lifting rudder allows the shallow to be explored or return to your mooring long after the tide has ebbed. The afore mentioned rudder was replaced in 2012 and is in an as new condition.Engine & Electrics:
Vessel is powered by a Yamaha 4 HP 4-stroke outboard engine.
This has been well maintained and serviced at the latter end of 2016.
The engine is situated in a well at the transom and can be left in the down position, tilted a or removed completely and stored next to the separate fuel tank in the midships locker.
The motor can be used with the rudder in the up position when in shallow water.
The outboard well can be completely closed by dropping to closure blocks into position which are secured in place in seconds.
This restores the shape of the hull for more efficient sailing.
