Up to about 60 years ago on the island of Shetland a boat was the family car of its day. This delightful double ended boat is inspired by those craft.
She is clinker built and has part decking. With a lifting centreboard she can navigate shallow waters or be brought up onto the beach. As would have been traditional, she can be rowed or sailed. New sails are provided, together with a new all over winter cover.
Her trailer means she can easily be stored and transported.
This is a boat that will have been built from plans. We have not been able to identify the source of the plans, nor the builder, but her name, Ynyslas, suggests she was built by someone in mid Wales. We believe the date of build was around 1995.
We would be happy to hear from anyone who can give us more information about this vessel.
We are grateful to Moder Dy on Shetland (https://www.moderdy.org/ ) who provided us with so much background to these traditional boats, and whom we are pleased to sponsor.
Thanks too to Iain Oughtred, for his help, even though it turned out not to be one of his designs.
