Tatu of Brading is a 9ton Hillyard. David Hillyard built hundreds of boats from 2 ½ tons to 29 tons and they were, and still are, immensely popular. The 9 tonner centre cockpit design gave 2 separate sleeping cabins plus a saloon which is ideal for extended cruising. She has a engine 1 x diesel 35hp, Perkins 4107. She is long keeled and shaft driven. Tatu of Brading has had an extensive refit that was undertaken by a Master Shipwright, under the direction of a well known local marine surveyor to include partial replacement of the keel, new keel bolts, new garboards plus two planks above. This particular nine ton Hillyard was almost a “barn find”, having been laid up by the previous owner under cover for at least three years. An extensive refit was undertaken by a Master Shipwright, under the direction of a well known local marine surveyor to include partial replacement of the keel, new keel bolts, new garboards plus two planks above. The engine beds were refixed with new copper bolts, and she was refastened where required and totally recaulked. Following the shipwrighting she was burnt off and repainted. The Mast had been completely rebuilt with new internal wiring, and new standing rigging fitted by a Master Rigger. Crusader Sails refurbished the mainsail and supplied a new large genoa. The engine and gearbox were overhauled and repainted and 240v new mains electrics, batteries (3) and charger were fitted. The gas system was totally replaced and a gas safe certificate issued.
The latest book Hillyard by Nicholas Gray (Lodestar Books 2021) comments as follows: “In 1954, the new 9-tonner was introduced, which has been described as the most successful Hillyard of all […] standing headroom in the main saloon and aft cabin […] the centre cockpit is a safe refuge for the family”.
Tatu of Brading has just benefited from extensive works to her mast, toe rail and cabin sides, with repainting of the deck. The seacocks are freshly serviced as is the steering linkage. The Baby Blake has also undergone a full professional refit and new parts throughout. She comes antifouled and ready for the season. Whilst her Hillyard character has been maintained, the asking price allows for a possible rewire and upgrading of her navigation equipment depending on the new owners sailing intentions.
Tatu of Brading is a very nice example of a 9ton Hillyard. As any old wooden boat there are ongoing things to do, but as you will see from the owners comments in the inventory above, the owner has kept on top of the jobs and in fact has done some important ones e.g. the keel bolts, recently.
