Description
The Klipperaak has been continuously improved by the current owner into a pleasant sailing ship. Despite its compact dimensions, it offers a lot of living space inside, with a spacious kitchen, living room with a wood stove, bathroom with sufficient headroom, and 2 bedrooms. Are you looking for a spacious, ready-to-sail ship with limited dimensions? Then we warmly invite you to the klipperaak Avontuur.
Layout
From the aft deck, you descend into the old cabin, which now houses a spacious kitchen. While cooking, you have a beautiful view of the aquatic life. From here, the aft cabin is accessible with a 2nd bedroom. A corridor along the engine room leads you to the spacious living room with dining area, wood stove, and space for a relaxation sofa. Under the mast deck are the toilet, water tanks, and technical room. Further forward, you will find a spacious bedroom and bathroom.
From the foredeck, you have access to the fore cabin, which is now used as storage.
History
The Avontuur was built in 1913 by Haike Pieters van der Werff at Langewijk in Drachten. Haike Pieters van der Werff came from a family of shipbuilders around Drachten. His yard started around 1892 as one of the first in Friesland to build iron (instead of wooden) ships, which was very modern for that time. At the launch, interested parties came to see if the newly built iron ships would not sink.
The yard book mentions in 1913 a sharp aakje for Mr. Zwart from Marum in Groningen; this is the klipperaak Avontuur. The Avontuur transported mainly peat and turf, but sometimes also agricultural products such as potatoes, under sail around Friesland, Overijssel, and Drenthe from 1913 until the Second World War.
From 1937, the ship was owned by skipper Bos from Amsterdam. Around 1990, the Avontuur was bought by a carpenter from Hellevoetsluis. He used the ship for about 10 years as storage and workshop. At that time, the ship was still in its original state, and there was not even an engine installed.
In 1999, the ship was sold to Mr. Mellema from Aalsmeer. He took the ship to shipyard S.R.F. in Harlingen, where he had an engine installed and converted the ship into a sailing houseboat.
Technology
In 1999, the ship was technically overhauled by S.R.F. with the installation of a different ship engine and a sail plan. The current owner bought the ship in 2019 and has since systematically improved it further. The steelwork has been thoroughly addressed, and a steel mast has been installed. The sail plan has been improved with a new mainsail and jib. The engine room has also been worked on, including a different generator. The exterior woodwork has been addressed, and the bedroom, bathroom, and living room have been rebuilt inside.
The ship was last inspected at the yard in 2023, and the CVO/CBB is valid until 2030. The new owner can explore the waterways under sail in the coming years.
Sailing Area
The ship is perfect for sailing trips. It has participated several times in the Strontrace.
Given its dimensions and the historical hull, the Avontuur is welcome via the Schepencarrousel in various ports. Due to its size, it is also a delightful ship to explore the Wadden Sea and the European waterways. The ship can be sailed with a small boating license.
