Sharifa is a classically designed Cheoy Lee Offshore 41 Custom Ketch, built in Hong Kong in 1979 based upon tried and tested ocean going lines. The “Custom” designation means that owners could add many extras to the basic specification, so the interior enjoys a very lavish use of solid teak and teak veneer throughout the accommodation as well as other detailed refinements. Sharifa was launched in Hong Kong by the first owner who then shipped her to the UK.

General Description
The accommodation comprises three compartments as follows. At the foot of the companionway to starboard, there is the door to the owners double stateroom with a two hanging wardrobes, one of which is also heated as a drying locker. There are three drawers, two foot lockers and very extensive under bunk stowage in addition to cave lockers over the lower end of the bunk. There is also a private door giving direct access to the shower and heads.

To port of the companionway, there are two pilot berths with 3 drawers and a locker. These two berths would suit younger crew members as the upper bunk has a lee cloth
Also to port just forward of the pilot berths is the comprehensive navigation station, with chart table and ample chart stowage under, all the instruments are readily accessible as is the DSC VHF radio, this is connected to the GPS for automatic position transmission in the event of an emergency. Over the chart table is the 240v AC and 12v DC panels with circuit breakers and switches. The boat is equipped with two mains cables for charging joined by “blue” waterproof three pin plugs.

Forward of the Navigation station is the galley area and opposite is the heads and shower room. The galley is conveniently designed such that the working area does not obstruct passage for and aft. It is in a “U” shape with full formica work surface and a four burner gas hob, with grill and oven below. The fridge occupies the whole of the after side of the galley, with a large door and a top load hatch to the freezer plate compartment. A stainless steel sink with teak cover/chopping block is on the forward side with hot and cold pressurised water taps, plus a manual hand pump.

Behind the hob are a useful group of lockers for crockery, mugs, glasses and dry food. In the corner is a deep locker with the three removable shelves for long term food storage with a 50+ can capacity. The shower & heads to starboard, has its own sliding teak door and the deck area forms the shower tray and has a teak grating. The flexible hosed shower head is mounted on the deck head and the whole surrounded by a curtain.The heads is outboard with a good sized locker behind while the sink unit is mounted on the forward bulkhead with a mirror over. Small personal lockers are adjacent for personal crew wash items.

The galley heads area opens out into the main saloon with a circular table mounted amidships, around which is a horseshoe shaped seating. This area is the full width of Sharifa and make a very comfortable area in which to relax, dine or entertain. The centre of the table opens to provide glass stowage.The table will lower to create a very large double berth with its own set of matching central cushions. Behind and above the the saloon seats are double book shelves with fiddles to keep every thing in place at sea. There are draws under the after end of the seats on either side and a deep locker on the starboard side adjacent to a further the large wardrobe. There is also another bookshelf made to take the RCC & Imray sized hard cover Pilot Books a number of which will remain as will English and French Almanacs. Under seat lockers provide yet more stowage and to port and starboard in the forward corners are a further two lockers.

A door leads to the fore cabin with a single berth to starboard although a long wide storage shelf on the port side could convert to a second berth. There is a hanging wardrobe, cabinet and drawer. Under berth locker to starboard. The chain locker is located in the bows with a lower self feeding
locker beneath the forward end of the berth.

The cockpit has deep lockers to port and starboard and a further large locker aft. There is more than enough space to stow all the mooring ropes, fenders, spare anchors and gear needed long term cruising. On the after deck is the self draining gas locker with capacity for two Camping Gas bottles, the reason for selecting this make of bottle was their ready availability on the continent. A further spare bottle is stowed in one of the cockpit lockers providing months of supply.

Sharifa is an ideal self contained short or long distance cruiser, especially suited to those who wish to spend time afloat. She was my home for over 5 years and both my wife and I have both enjoyed our time living aboard for long periods, much of it in France.
