Inchcape - 45 Motor Sailor

The Inchcape design was inspired by Scottish fishing boats and built as strong, powerful seaworthy vessels with all the comforts of a pleasure yacht, this created a very popular design with spacious and comfortable living accommodation, bags of character and superior strength and sea keeping.

This Inchcape 45 motor sailor has just undergone a major refit in her current ownership and is in exceptional condition throughout, mechanically, structurally and visually. Previously she cruised  the Mediterranean, Spain and Portugal and she has just returned from the west coast of Scotland, A perfect vessel for gentle adventures and live-aboard exploring with 'little ship' features and characteristics. 
She could be a wonderful alternative to the Nordhavn or Nordic Tug you might be looking at..............lots more boat for much less money.

Hull and Construction

  • Planked in 1.5” Iroko fastened with 3” galvanised boat nails to sawn oak frames in futtocks. 
  • Stem and stern posts, apron, hog and deadwoods in oak.
  • Heavy  iroko beamshelf fastened through each frame head stretches the full length of the ship with a stringer at a lower level.
  • The whole hull has been splined and Cascover sheathed to the waterline from new.
  • Deck is made up of 2 layers of 9mm marine grade plywood silicon bronze gripfast fastened and glued to oak deck beams and sheathed externally with Cascover. 
  • Deck beams are 3.5” x 5” and fastened through the beamshelf each end.
  • Bulwarks all round on oak stanchions mounted through the deck and fastened alongside the frames.
  • Pine and iroko bulwark planking with an Iroko capping rail.

Machinery and Electrics

  • Enormous engine room with superb access to all machinery, electrics, tanks and systems. 
  • Bilges, flooring and hull sides are all finished in immaculate white gloss.
  • Ford Mermaid 6 cyl 135hp diesel, installed new in 1990
    (The engine is in immaculate condition and has been meticulously maintained in present ownership)
  • Single lever controlled PRM 302/402 hydraulic gearbox
  • Stainless steel shaft (Replaced in 2012) to large 3 blade bronze propeller
  • Stripper Rope cutter Mase 3.5kw installed generator, new 2012.
    (Seawater cooled with a dedicated 12v start battery.) 
  • Generator provides 240v power and charges all battery banks through a 240v smart charger
  • Domestic bank of 4 x 6 volt Trojan batteries 24v system, new 2014
  • Generator start battery 12v
  • 4 x 12v Exide Engine start and bow thruster batteries, new 2014
  • Pressurised water system from a F.i.e.t turbine 24v electric pump.
  • Hot water from a calorifier tank heated with a 240v immersion or from engine.
  • Carbon and fine filter serves a galley water tap
  • Wills Ridley Hydraulic wheel steering system (Recently removed and serviced)
  • Rudder feedback potentiometers attached
  • 24v MCB Distribution Board to all cicuits wired with ships cable

  • Gaff ketch rig on deck stepped varnished spruce masts.
  • Mizzen is Bermudan rigged.
  • Mainmast was new in 2012. 
  • Both masts mounted in galvanised tabernacles. 
  • Structure under the mainmast tabernacle has been reinforced including installation of compression post.
  • Varnished yards and booms.
  • Stainless steel standing rigging to s/s rigging screws and internal galvanised chainplates. 
  • Running  rigging new 2012.
  • Mainmast has twin lowers and a single cap shroud.
  • Mizzen has twin cap shrouds.
  • Mainmast running backstays on tackles.
  • Twin Forestay to the stemhead fitting takes hanked on genoa.
  • All running rigging blocks have been rebuilt with new sheaves and cheeks.

(The whole rig was removed from the boat and after the new mainmast was made, new wiring and electrics were fitted to both masts and all spars were finished with 10 coats of varnish.)


  • Large fairleads through the bulwark
  • Admiralty style galvanised cleats mounted solidly to the deck
  • Varnished teak hatch forward gives access to the fore cabin.
  • Simpson Lawrence Francis 24v anchor windlass mounted on the centreline Secure stowage for the main anchor and anchor davit on the deck.
  • Bronze rectangular potholes fore and aft (Recently refurbished) Varnished teak handrails and dorade vent boxes on coach roof Mainmast tabernacle mounted on the coachroof deck.
  • Large storage boxes for warps and fenders mounted on the aft end of the coachroof deck.
  • Mizzen mast mounted on the aft coachroof against the aft end of the wheelhouse.
  • Aft coachroof has gas locker storage boxes and chocks for the inflatable tender to sit.
  • Aft seat/storage locker in Varnished teak

Ground Tackle

  • 60lb CQR with 55m 7/16” galvanised chain
  • Extra 25m 10mm chain
  • Large fisherman anchor
  • Kedge anchor


6 berths in 3 cabins.  (All berths are full length and a good width.)

Wheel House:  
Wheelhouse is entered through sliding doors either side. 
Helm position to port with navigation equipment, engine controls and 24v switchboard.  Chart table on port side. 
Seating in aft starboard corner.

Saloon and below decks space:
Saloon is entered from the forward starboard side of the wheelhouse with steps down.  Galley to port against the aft bulkhead and stowage to starboard under the deckhead.
Saloon is very spacious with excellant headroom and plenty of light from the bronze portholes. 
Varnished pine sole boards lift up in sections to give access to fresh water tanks and the bilge.
Dropleaf saloon table U-shaped seating around the table on the port side with a pilot berth behind under the deckhead. 
Single settee to starboard with another pilot berth behind. 
Masses of storage in lockers around the saloon.
Diesel fired Newport Dickinson cabin heater mounted on the forward bulkhead. Centreline passageway going forward Heads compartment to port and a shower compartment to starboard.
Forecabin has full standing headroom and 2 berths.
Lockers beneath the berths and hanging lockers under the deckhead at the aft end. Steps up the bulkhead to forehatch above for emergency exit.
Forward bulkhead in the forecabin has hatch doors giving access to a large storage area.

Forward Heads:
Simpson Lawrence Kentigern sea toilet pumps overboard.
Hand basin with pressurised hot and cold water.
Shower compartment with pressurised hot and cold water.
Shower drains to an aluminium storage tray which is electrically pumped overboard.

Comfortable galley with good storage and work surfaces.
Fixed 4 ring gas hob with stainless steel fiddle rail all round. 
Gas oven set below the work surface.
Single stainless sink with a draining board pressurised hot and cold water, plus  manual pumped bronze taps for tanked water and sea water.
Combination Microwave mounted on a plinth above the galley.
Custom made storage for crockery, pots and pans on the outboard side of the galley under the deckhead.
24v fridge under the work surface.
Built-in isotherm chest fridge on the starboard side opposite main galley area.

Aft Cabin:
Spacious with two single berths.
Ensuite Heads Ladder to exit hatch.
Access to engine room.
Good under berth storage
