High specification with carbon mast / boom and extensive sail inventory
This high specification, skipper maintained, Grand Soleil 56 from the Philippe Briand design office benefits from a carbon 3 spreader mast, carbon "Park Avenue" boom, deep custom carbon rudder and stock plus an extensive sail inventory.
She has been upgraded to offer many sail handling options so that she can be set up correctly for inshore racing as well as shorthanded offshore sailing and is quite manageable with a husband and wife only, however she can also keep 16 people entertained at regattas.
This Grand Soleil 56 machinery includes a Yanmar 98Hp engine (2261 hours September 2015) with Flex-o-fold propeller, 6Kw Generator (220 hours September 2015), Mastervolt inverter and retractable bow thruster.
White Alcantara upholstery with Burmese teak satin interior and teak and holly sole boards give this already spacious Grand Soleil 56 an airy feel below decks where LED lighting maintains the light atmosphere at night.
She has a spacious saloon with C-shaped dining area and bench seat to starboard which benefits from Climma air conditioning; her accommodation comfortably sleeps six in an ensuite master cabin forward plus two ensuite doubles aft, her saloon can also be converted to sleep an additional two if required. All bathrooms are fitted with Jabsco electric flush.
Grand Soleil provide a well-equipped U shaped galley with Corian style work surfaces opposite large forward facing chart table, both with plenty of storage.
Her large uncluttered full teak decks sport a package of Harken, Spinlock and Navtec deck gear and hydraulics. She has an opening side and pushpit gates and an electric opening transom / bathing platform with swim ladder and to maintain her uncluttered decks forward has a folding anchor arm to stow the anchor below the foredeck when not in use.
Cream deck canvas includes sprayhood and sprayhood garage cover, Helm bimini with stainless frame connecting to full boom tent and boom stack pack cover.
This Grand Soleil 56 benefits from recent upgrades including:
Complete with safety equipment including EPIRB, RORC Flare pack and Jonbouy recovery module.
EU VAT paid and British registered for secure transfer of title.
I decided on a GS56 because most agree that 56’ is the largest waterline length boat that a couple can handle safely. I discounted all of the mass production boatbuilders such as Hanse, Beneteau, Jeanneau, Dufour because I think the build quality and interior joinery is poor and they go for over beamy hulls to squeeze in accommodation at the expense of sea kindliness and performance. I don’t like centre cockpit boats such as the Oyster because I think its the wrong place to helm a boat from and you’re too far removed from the back of the boat when you’re mooring stern too shorthanded. I looked at the Swan 56 but its interior layout is poor and it has a single wheel which restricts movement around the cockpit. With stern to mooring in the Med I wanted the owners cabin to forward to avoid the noise.
The following features make SHINE easy to handle by a couple:
- Fold down stern platform for easy throwing of stern lines and jumping ashore
- Remote controls for anchor windlass
- Slab main reefing with lazy jacks and V-boom. With hi-load battens cars the main drops quickly and easily to each reef point. There is a single clip at the mast and wind in the reefing pennant at the hatch.
- Electric winch at hatch for all halyards, reefing and spinnaker trimming.
- Profurl on jib which is no-overlapping. The genoa winches are not powered but they are powerful and so as the jib is small it can be winched in with a few turns.
- German mainsheet system which means you have a powerful winch next to each helm and can adjust the main easily whilst helming.
- Raymarine chart platter in cockpit table which also controls the hifi.
