Alan Pape - Steelmaid 38
Steelmaid 38 Ketch Yacht FOR SALE
"Stealaway" a steel bluewater cruiser for sale.
History and Construction -
Professionally built in Britain this Bluewater cruiser is set up for the job. "Stealaway" was refitted in 1999 with the current interior and has had many upgrades to the equipment since then, including new bowthruster and new watermaker for the current owner, who bought the boat in 2009. There is such a wealth of inventory that you can easily see that this boat has been well cared for and loaded with sailing goodies enough to make the chandlery owners' see their retirement plans come to fruition.
The vendor sailed to boat across the Atlantic and then kept her stationed in the Caribbean using it for the sailing season each year. We have used over 100 photographs on this webpage, because we know that you are probably contemplating a long journey to go and view "Stealaway" and you will be well prepared with our information. These photos were taken by the vendor, the majority were taken in February 2014 in St. Vincent, there were a few over the three months previously when she was afloat, and there are just a very few dating from 2009 and 2010. She is currently in St.Vincent and available for you to view by appointment.
From the drawing board of Alan Pape, ketch rigged and centre cockpit for ease of short handed sailing, with the long keel for stability and good sea-keeping ability. With a complete sail wardrobe including the two staysails for downwind sailing, this Stealmaid 38 is just the ticket for serious offshore sailing.
The hull was re-epoxy coated in 2011. The central cockpit is covered with a hard doghouse and under the cockpit sits the engine compartment with the Perkins diesel engine. To port of the engine compartment is a separate workshop or Bosun's store, which is accessed via a door in the galley area. Inside the store is the watermaker, the intelligent battery conditioners, chargers, plus spare ropes etc.
The saloon has been adapted to make a double berth to port utilising one wing of the table, with space below for the freezer. This could easily be returned to a single berth if required. An ample chart table and navigation area is to starboard of the companionway, next to the passageway leading to the aft cabin. The heads are forward of the saloon, with toilet, sink and shower. The sink surface has had acetone spilt on it, so is not cosmetically perfect. Forward via a watertight door is the forecabin with bunk, stowage and the tube housing the bow thruster. The aft cabin has a double berth, storage and opening hatch over.
As mentioned previously the boat is fully equipped, with navigation equipment and charts for crossing the Atlantic and sailing the windward isles. The Laptop computer is an additional navigation aid, as it connects to the instruments on the boat, plus the Pactor Modem on the SSB radio so you can download Grib and text files, (email).
