Built by Bertram Yacht of Miami, USA in 1980. The model is a Bertram 47 Aft cabin (Now quoted by fans as an “American Modern Classic”). This style was a move by the company into the luxury leisure market, from being the premier maker of strong and seaworthy Atlantic Coast/Gulf sports fishing boats.
Consequently every aspect of the boat is, by modern standards, over built and over specified. Most of the equipment on board has now been thoroughly updated. The semi displacement style design, with a small keel running along the latter half of the hull makes the boat very stable and easy to handle, even in heavy seas. She has three leisure areas, the foredeck and the saloon roof for sun bathing, and the covered aft deck for lazy lounging in the cool. She has two optimum cruising speeds,
9 knots (1000 rpm) in displacement mode which is very economical on fuel, and 20 knots (2100 rpm) at semi displacement speed. The Detroit Diesel 671 engines are renowned for their durability and reliability.
The boat islarge enough to accommodate six people and the crew in comfort for two weeks at a time. The sense of space and variety ofsitting / leisure areas on offer mean that there is no sense of claustrophobia. The surrounding eye-level windows ensure that the saloon is always light and airy. The only fixed furniture in the saloon is the sofa which is very comfortable. The rest of the space is available for any arrangement of chairs and tables that is required. The saloon is approximately 25sqm, giving considerable space to the 6 ft wide sofa (which opens out to a full size double bed) and up to 4 occasional chairs. Locker spaces surround the saloon, and the coffee table can be raised to form a dining table.
The Fore Cabin
The guest/ fore cabin has twin single bunks 4’x 6’6”in A “V” layout. There is plenty of cupboard and locker space for storage, both below the bunks and inside a very large cupboard. The layout of the boat forward ensures that the fore cabin is a private pace with its own cabin door. The cabin is equipped with 12v, 110v and 220v outlets, individual bunk lights and a dedicated air conditioning outlet. The forward en-suite head is very roomy with a separate shower and toilet area. This head is
also fitted with a new Vetus toilet and shower
The adjacent galley is very large by comparison with modern boats of this size. A step down from the saloon, it has recently been refitted with a new Smev 4 burner/grill/oven gas oven and a 12 volt Waeco solid state refrigerator. There is also a 220 v and 12v supply to the galley enabling the use of an electric kettle if desired.
The new water pump drives a hot and cold water system and the sink is also equipped with a fresh water filter system. There is ample storage in a variety of cupboards.
The Aft Cabin
The en-suite toilet and shower is fitted with new Vetus toilets and a water pump providing almost “power shower” pressure to the shower. Three steps down from the saloon the owners/ aft cabin has twin 4’6” x 6’6” singles with plenty of cupboard and locker space for storage. The side lights open for fresh air but have mosquito
netting fitted outside to ensure a peaceful night.
The Main Helm and Aft Deck
The aft deck is large enough to hold 8 people dining in comfort, protected from the sun by the full cover canopy and from the wind by the side deck doors and zip and clip covers. The transom has been adapted to provide easy access on the starboard side to the swim platform and on the port side to the passerelle, which is hydraulically operated. Given that the boat was designed for the Caribbean / Gulf in the 1980’s, the layout works remarkably well for long range Mediterranean cruising. The internal helm station has total visibility and protection from the sun and less comfortable elements, but the lower part of the windscreen can be opened to provide a cooling breeze. Two individual aft helm seats. Set of sunscreen panels that go round on all 3 sides of the aft deck. All of the main navigational and engine instruments and controls are easily to hand and are clearly visible. The Raytheon Radar and Chart plotter are located to the right of the helm but can easily be disassembled if the boat is left unattended. The VHF and cassette player are located in a console above the helm. Or really bad weather or when the boat is left unattended the whole helm area or even the whole aft deck can be sealed off using zip and clip covers. To the left of the helm is a small locker holding a fresh water tap and sink which doubles as a swim shower.
