Additional Description

The Sea Ranger is designed by Bill Dixon and the unique hull form gives unparalleled performance at both high and low speeds. At lower speeds the hull acts as you would expect a heavy displacement vessel to behave, whilst at high speed the hull planes but is uniquely stable even in adverse weather conditions.

Additional Description

Moving around the deck is a real joy. The Sea Ranger has levels of safety that most powerboat owners can only dream about. With 20in (510mm) wide teak-laid side decks, Pavarotti would feel comfortable fetching the fenders. And the tall, sturdy guardrails, deep bulwarks, and handrails in all the right places would ensure he stayed aboard, even in rough seas. The 448 is one of few boats whose owners could consider allowing their children to roam outside the confines of the saloon. The offset davits are a great idea, leaving one side clear for boardingvia the bathing platform. Side boarding is another benefit, although given the height of the topsides, a recessed step would help. Mooring lines onto the three pairs of stout 12in (300mm) cleats run over stainless steel plates to protect the beautiful teak, while the forward lines run through huge rollers. Stainless baskets are provided for four big fenders, with useful fender eyes along the guardrails. As well as the aft deck, foredeck, and aft cockpit to choose from, the 448 has a spacious flybridge. This comfortably seats eight people around a U-shaped area, with a good wet bar opposite. Although there are four unstayed lids, the stowage below the seats has shrewdly been left undivided to accommodate long and bulky items. Helmsmen have a clear view of the instrumentation, and there's enough space to add four standard repeaters. With the throttles sighted high, standing for close-quarters manoeuvring is comfortable, but once again you must perch uneasily on the edge of the non-adjustable seat to reach the throttles properly. The handrails and screens have been kept high, so both work extremely well.

Protecting Your Investment

There is another long-term benefit of ownership of one of these craft. Having just invested in your new boat, you will probably wish to enjoy its use for many years to come. Nevertheless, it is reassuring to know that your cherished purchase is equally in demand when the time comes to sell and that it will command a high residual value. Moreover, part of our service is to help customers to resell, when required.

Handling and Performance and Superstructure

With engines pulling a shade over their standard 2,600 rpm, we achieved 26.0 knots. With four crew, 75% fuel, full water tanks, and a tender in the davits adding almost three tonnes on load, the 448 could obviously achieve higher speeds. However, it has been sensibly propped to allow for rougher conditions, fouling, and the extended 'full load' cruising it's likely to experience. Not surprisingly, the 448 handles differently to most boats. At pre-planing speeds, where it's not generating dynamic lift, it felt and handles like a semi-displacement form. At berthing speeds, the hull responded like an obedient dog: after any manoeuvre, it would sit completely still awaiting instructions, and resist the temptation for disconcerting behaviour. At higher speed, the hull felt more like a heavy, soft riding planing form. During our test, the largest waves were, unfortunately, those generated by the 45ft (13.7m) boat being used to take photos of the Sea Ranger. Crossing these waves, or riding along them, the 448 responded well to throttle input: in general, the faster it went, the more steady it became. This bodes well for handling in rough conditions, which most of us like to escape from as quickly as possible. Then there's the exceptional sea-keeping characteristics which come from the dynamics of exact weight distribution, trim prop and rudder dimensions. Add the company's dedication to the highest levels of material specification and craftsmanship. Now, add the facility for yacht buyers to work with our designers in order to personalise the detail and finish of each craft, and over a centuries boat building experience amongst our four company directors alone.

Engine Notes
