This Zee Tjalk Dutch Barge is an absolute classic! Built in 1898 as a commercial sea-going barge of iron and steel, Harmonie is in truly amazing condition. With 8mm steel plating and the traditional Zee Tjalk double framing in the lower hull, this beauty was built to last [See construction section]. Harmonie has also been substantially re-built between 2007 and 2014. No fancy stuff or chintz in this barge, but rather good nautical features and finishes, plenty of natural wood and sound external marine protection. The current owner has created a stunning and very spacious livaboard home in Harmonie and maintained that 'Dutch' atmosphere and appearance which she rightly deserves. This is a comfortable home with all mod cons. She's berthed at Hythe Quay, Colchester, which has its own rich history stretching back to the first Roman settlers. The barge is powered by a substantial Humbolt-Klocken Deutz 70hp engine which is in good order. This fabulous barge has benefitted from really deep pocket spends during the last seven years and is well set for many years to come.

Harmonie's history: Built in 1898 in the Loading Wharf in Friesland - Barkmeijers in Sneek. Built for North Sea / Baltic trades. Registered in Friesland. Owner/ skippers operated the Zee Tjalk barge for trade with England and the Baltic: Step 1 - From Holland to England with bricks and tiles. Step 2 - Grain from East Anglia to the Baltic States. Step 3 - Timber to the Netherlands. During winter months, Oct to April, layed up for painting and repairs in owner's home town. Also, the 'mate' aboard would sell wood, peat and coal from the barge to the village residents, which had been loaded in Belgium. The mast was removed in 1939, the hold extended, and she traded only in inland waters with a cargo of 220 tonnes. 1961-2 retired to work with her retired owner/skipper to transport a 'Merry-go-Round' to the villages and towns of the Netherlands for Carnivals and Festivals. 1970 - 2005 family owned with two children. 2007 - 2014 in present ownership and total rebuild and refurbishment.
