Thames Sailing Barge 82ft, Charter vessel,live aboard houseboat. Sailing Barge Kitty was built in 1895 by J & H Cann of Harwich to carry cargoes of grain in the North Sea. The star painted on her topsail is the original owner’s mark (J Horlocks) used to identify ships at long distances.
Having undergone major refurbishment. Her gleaming wood and brass confirms the widely-held opinion amongst the barge community that Sailing Barge Kitty is now considered to be one of the finest barges that is currently available for charter. She provides a unique location for corporate hospitality, family celebrations and team building.
Whether on deck, down below in the saloon, or perhaps unwinding in the bar, Kitty has something to offer everyone. This treasure of maritime history, together with its modern entertainment systems, will provide an unforgettable venue for any special celebrations or corporate events .
Originally built in 1895 for A. & R. Horlock of Mistley, Kitty was used to transport cargo along the East Coast and the continent until 1938.
History of Sailing Barge Kitty; One of 37 barges built by J & H Cann at Gas House Creek, Harwich, Kitty was built in 1895. Cann's where renowned for both high quality workmanship and a reputation for building fast vessels. This reputation for speed is evidenced by the number of East Coast Barge races she has won over the years.
Construction; Kitty is 25 metres in length, with a 6.5 metre beam; she is massively built on oak frames and floors and clad in 3 and 4 inch pitch pine. She still has her original pine keelson 0.4 metres square and 23 metres long. Her spritsail rig has a sail area of almost 3000 square feet and her gross tonnage is 79 tons and is capable of carrying a cargo of 150 tons.
